Hearing Voices: The world is a volatile place today. People are on edge as tensions rise and divides deepen around race, indigenous peoples, immigration, gender, sexuality, environment and more. Feeling the heat? Option 1: Wait for it to all blow over. Option 2: Engage. Stepping into the heat isn’t as hard as it may seem. It starts with hearing the voices that have long been ignored. Fabric is spending Oct and Nov exploring what it means to hear these voices and to dismantle the traps that have silenced them. Sound too hard or heavy? Well, you can always wait for it to all blow over...  Sundays and in Fabric Groups, Oct 20-Nov 24. The future is full of hope and possibility. Here’s what we talked about…

October 20: Hearing Voices. The world is not the place you think it is. Your world has been carefully curated to present a certain story that has a lot to do with how life turns out for different people. Whether you’ve been aware of it or not, you have been advantaged or disadvantaged by that story. That isn’t the world Jesus told stories about nor that stands behind the unrealized dream of “All people are created equal.” Welcome to the first of our six-week odyssey of listening to more stories from more voices; starting with your own.

October 27: My Name is Not Those People’ – A week with Julia Dinsmore. Author, poet, singer-songwriter and poverty abolitionist, Julia has a voice more people need to hear. Her poem “My Name is Not Those People” uses her creative voice and storytelling to talk about the one thing we too often ignore – class and poverty in America. Julia has spoken to groups like ours, major universities and the halls of congress. She’ll be with us Oct 27 to open up our worlds. Bring others along to hear Julia’s clarion voice.

November 3: Story Stitch: Telling Stories. Opening Minds. Becoming Neighbors. That’s a pretty big claim for a card game, but it has begun! Thanks to Tea Rozman-Clarke and Green Card Voices’ game changing strategy of hearing 1st person stories, walls are falling and bridges are being built. There is a loooong way to go, however. Come be part of the movement on Nov. 3 as we experience the power of this game to make us neighbors, an experience we hope you’ll repeat with your neighbors. greencardvoices.com

November 10: The Stories of Our Bodies. Enroute to an equitable world in which all people not only stand a chance, but lift one another up, we have to realize that it isn’t just a battle of ideas, it’s a battle of bodies. You probably just want to be you - not the white, black, brown, tall, short, male, female, or non-gender conforming one you inhabit - but the truth is that in today’s world the category your body fits into speaks loudly to every person you pass by. It’s time to hear the stories our bodies tell so we can free them.

November 17: Planning Your Journey from Them to Us. Every change starts with an idea, a change of heart, a shifted paradigm but unless it informs what we do it remains just an idea. Our focus on ‘Hearing Voices’ is not meant to make us more open-minded, but more open-lived. On Nov 17 we will use our collective time, experience, energy and courage to each plan our own ‘What’s Next.’ It’s your chance to step into your growth zone with others. It’s growth. It’s fun. It’s being a neighbor. It’s life!

Step into the growth zone with others. Share ideas here.

November 24: Hear My Voice, Listen to My Story. Take the prompt, “What you don’t know about me…” and tell us your story. We don’t have to know everything about each other, but what do we need to know about you so that we actually know you? This last week of ‘Hearing Voices’ we’ll be doing just that, hearing the voices, listening to the stories of people in our midst. Stories that make us whole, three dimensional, real. Do you have one?
